Biodiesel has become a mainstream fuel popular with fleets that want to reduce their emissions in a cost-effective way while maintaining strong engine performance. 

But don’t take our word for it. Here are seven facts about biodiesel’s popularity and its environmental benefits. 

 

1. U.S. biodiesel consumption has grown 117.5% since 2012, hitting nearly 2 billion gallons in 2017, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. 

2. Biodiesel was the most popular alternative fuel option among respondents in the 2018 Fleet Purchasing Outlook published by the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA). It was also the top pick for future interest in alternative fuels. 

3. Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86 percent and fossil fuel use by 80 percent compared with petroleum diesel, according to recent studies. 

4. Biodiesel had already earned the distinction of being the first fuel named an advanced biofuel by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency based on its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% compared with petroleum. 

5. Fueled by its low carbon intensity score, biodiesel volumes in California increased nearly 1,200% from 2011 to 2016, as reported in an REG white paper on the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
